Full course description
Applied Mathematics is a 10-week online, asynchronous course designed for adult learners seeking to strengthen practical math skills for academic, professional, and everyday applications. As part of PSC’s Credit for Prior Learning and Prior Learning Assessment pathway, this non-credit course helps students build foundational quantitative reasoning, spreadsheet literacy, and data literacy skills while preparing for future credential and credit opportunities.
Throughout the course, students will explore real-world scenarios such as budgeting, travel planning, data interpretation, and decision-making using mathematical reasoning and digital tools. Students will apply concepts from algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability while developing confidence using technology, such as Excel, to organize information, analyze data, identify patterns, and communicate findings effectively.
This self-paced course requires approximately 10 hours of work per week and includes formative checks for understanding throughout the term, culminating in a final applied project that integrates course concepts into a real-world problem-solving experience.
A certificate of completion will be awarded to students who successfully complete the course.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Use mathematical tools and technology to perform calculations and solve real-world problems.
- Apply appropriate mathematical concepts in personal, academic, and professional contexts.
- Communicate quantitative information effectively using charts, graphs, and data summaries.
- Analyze everyday scenarios using mathematical reasoning.
- Design original solutions to real-world problems using mathematical reasoning, visual representations, and clear communication.
